1 beating - give a beating
Thank you thank you [20 Jun 2009|11:23pm]
[ mood | exhausted ]

Just got home from my second night of swing dancing and I'm energised again. Sleep won't be coming too soon, that's for sure.

But now I have blisters from my shoes, which I think is totally awesome since that's not happened before. It probably means my shoes need a bit of work or they don't work without inserts/with these socks, but I'm going to put it down to lots of dancing.

Man, seriously need to get some more slipshoe practice. At this rate though I'll have olympic ice-skater legs.

You Aucklander types who've been dancing since I left - I need to get each of you and a follow into a room with a nice floor so I can steal your shit!

I've decided diversity - regionally - is the key to dancing nirvana.

Once I had plundered Auckland of it's finest I shall move on.

Man, this is going to take a very long time, so much so I don't imagine I'll live through to the end of it.

Anyway, shower time, I'm a tad moist.

P.S.
If you're into lindy hop in New Zealand I now point you to http://www.speakeasy.org.nz, a forum I've started up to get people from all regions talking. It's only as good as people can make it, so go for it!

Busy little bees [14 Jun 2009|11:30am]

[ music | Another Version of the Truth, NiN ]

So, here I am at work, on a Sunday. Still in Wellington.

And you thought I hadn't posted because I was an international man of mystery, keeping myself busy keeping my mate Ahmadinejad gainfully employed.

Alas no, I'm your regular working stiff (ooh err) who enjoys sleeping in on the weekends and generally getting by without too much trouble.

It dawned on me a few minutes ago that the time between my last 2 posts was in excess of a year. That's quite a while, really. So here's my current drivel:

I'm working on my car, or rather, the things that go into my car. I've been struggling with it for a while ever since the touchscreen cracked and I had to replace it with another one from China which of course is ever so slightly too big to fit the bezel I've been sweating over to get right. I'll just have to order a whole new touchscreen I guess.

Oh right, you probably don't know what it is I'm actually doing. Well, thanks to Master Fraser's big mouth and my complete inability to do things simply I'm installing a mac mini in the car with a touchscreen integrated in the dash up front. Along with the amps, the DLS components and subs, it really is quite impressive. It's just finding the motivation in the evenings and weekends to go downstairs and attack things with powertools - provided I don't get eaten by the box monsters we've banished to the basement.

I really should discombobulate them before adventurers start exploring the lower depths and start bitching at me because the drops aren't first age (that's for you Andrewthir or McCollandir or whatever you may call yourself).

Which reminds me, this gave me a chuckle.

Anyway I best move along and try and save this project from total failure

Yours manfully,

Lumpy McHotsocks

10 Years Ago, I...
1) was teaching the teachers about 'pooters (how sad is that)
2) played far too much 500
3) thought I didn't need to try very hard

5 Years Ago, I...
1) was heading for the biggest break down of my short life
2) contemplating chucking in Uni for my working life
3) was terribly sick of being a student

2 Years Ago, I...
1) rejoined the workforce
2) no longer needed anti-depressants
3) was driving for about 4 hours a day to and from work

2) had trebled my income
3) took up swing dancing

So far this year, I've...
1) moved to Wellington
2) made a partnership I didn't think was possible
3) been busier than I can remember

Yesterday, I...
1) went to Logan Brown and had a great meal
2) watched the censors cuts for several Shaw Brothers films from the 70's: hilarious!
3) figured out a lot about fudging beans with struts

Today, I...
1) have lunch with the girls
2) should finish up this months invoicing
3) pick up a new ipod nano so I can use it for running

Tomorrow, I'll...

Swing Dancers! [20 Sep 2007|02:58pm]
So, as some of you may or may not know I've been swing dancing for over a year now and I'm not totally bitter you lot waited until I moved cities before you picked it up.

Never the less, why haven't I recognised too many registrations from you lot for this years New Zealand eXchange?

You don't have to be a brilliant dancer, in fact, if you're not a brilliant dancer then that's even better since it's the best time to get some learnin' in!

Check out the Jitterbugs website (http://jitterbugs.co.nz/nzx007/) for more info on it.

If I can fly up from Welly to go to it I'm sure some of ya's could make the trip from Auckland :)

My first exchange last year was THE BIGGEST improvement in my dancing I've ever seen.

We had Sinclair over from Singapore last year and he's coming back this year, you can see a clip of Sinclair and Shane having a bit of a clown around from yonder YouTube.

More observant types will find me on there 10kgs heavier than I am now (I had lost 20kg thanks to dancing but since moving to Wellington I've put 10 back on :( )

Exciting times [18 Jun 2007|10:08pm]
[ mood | mellow ]

Hullo all of you wonderful people out there in internet land!

First of all let me apologise about the time between posts, but I'm a very busy guy who normally charges by the hour, so count yourself lucky I don't have your billing address.

Now here's Tom with the weather...

[info]8ball_gag and I have recently moved into this wonderful new place here in Wadestown, Wellington. We've both been in Wellington a number of months now and we've finally found ourselves a place we both can see ourselves settling into. For all of you 'easy-stalk' subscribers, you're going to have to wait for the next exciting installment on how to locate and spy upon our abode.

I'm still working at NZ Archives as a contractor. We've completed the last project and we're still waiting on Primeministerial release. In the meantime I find myself having to fill in the gaps with the smaller projects that are too small to mention. Needless to say that once something is on the interwub and externally accessable to y'all I'll be sure to let you know!

Dancing is an interesting prospect here in the windy city. It's almost as if they speak a slightly different language. I've come to the conclusion (with at least one other) that this is indeed West Coast Swing, which could explain the subtle differences I've found that often keep me just a little off-balance - which is a terrible thing when you're on your toes and dancing with a partner. Windy Lindy shall be arriving soon and I'm getting press-ganged into that. It has a South Pacific theme this year, which means I have no idea what the hell that means. After that there's the Auckland Lindy Exchange back in a camp in the south of Auckland. Busy times!

I've had my first live poker game here as well, which was an experience. They were playing loose and fast... just the way I liked it with my tight game. Problem was though they were playing open buy-ins with no cash-out options. Here's how it works: to play in the tournament there's a $20 entry free. You cannot leave the game and cash out the equivalent in cash of the chips you currently have. The bad part: when you're knocked out you can immediately buy in again with any amount you prefer. This basically meant that me sitting at the final table with my $20 buy-in sitting on around $50 in chips couldn't leave with that amount in cash as my two friends were waiting for me so we could leave. Fine, I can accept that, the tournament won't last forever. Unfortunately it CAN... after I knock out one player he buys back in with another $50... his second buy-in meaning his cash input is around $90 now. For anyone who's watched too much BS:G you know what it's like to know that no matter how many of them you kill they're just going to come back. I made a silly gamble next hand and left it at that. Oh well, you learn which tournaments are for you over time I guess :)

Currently I feel like the Narrator from Fight Club and I'm fixated on furniture. Seriously. I've just populated my latest acquisitions - two pine bookshelves - with my large enough trophy collection of books. Soon I shall move onto big fancy sets of stuff, as well as computer tables and matching lamp shades. If at any stage I shave your head and start telling you you're not a unique snowflake make sure to run up a big credit card bill soon.

I should be working on getting my rifle license but I'm procrastinating on that one. Primarily because I need to install a bolted-in lockable rifle case, and that takes time and effort. It's a real necessity though, when you want to get yourself a wonderful Mauser K98 rifle. I've just missed out on getting a specialty made blank-firing MP40 which would've been totally choice since it circumvents all that... but I snoozed and lost. I've already managed to import a genuine 11" K98 bayonet. Thanks to the gods the shipper listed it as an antique cutting tool and not "WW2 GERMAN NAZI K98 BAYONET with matching serial numbers".

I really should spend time like this writing that thing that I'd said I'll have finished all too soon. Huh.

Anyway, that's about it for now kiddies... I hope you're all having wonderful times spawning horrible slimey pig babies or whatever it is people do who aren't me.

Catch you in the funny papers,
- Andrich von Lumpstein

Though you can't be blamed for thinking such things...

I'm in Welly-wood! Yay!

Life has been totally jam-packed with a bunch of things so much so the last thing I wanted to do was post all about it on the inter-nerds.

Why today? I'm sick. Got some hideous telephone-flavoured death.

Work is hard out and I'm told my current abortion of a project is scheduled all too soon to be shown to the minister J Tizard and everyone's favourite Auntie Helen. This does irk me somewhat as it will obviously be the contractors fault if anything goes wrong. Butt-covering ointment has been applied liberally and one hopes it's enough! More on this later.

A list of things I've been doing down here:

army museums, botanical gardens, swing, A Day at the Races, work, a little bit of poker, getting new friends, wood-working, gardening, plotting a neighbours death, driving, wine-tasting, roller blading, writing (and now with a deadline), irish comedy, boardgames, watching a car get pulled back up from a cliff-face, shopping, complaining about my back, getting a firearms license, playing pretend dress-ups with Roy, and having Damian send me so many texts it's ridiculous.

It's not that I don't love you guys (I do, twice if there's an occassion) it's just I'm too damn busy to write everything down.

I'm going to go lie down and feel sorry for myself for a while... stupid cold.

Don't forget y'all can buzz me an email sometime: megalumpy@gmail.com, I'd love hear from y'all!

Limpidus Intellectus [19 Mar 2007|10:54am]
[ mood | paradisaical ]

It's been over 3 weeks now down here in Welling Town. To be completely honest with you, reader, it's gone by quite quickly now that I'm at the other end of it, though I do recall being in the middle of it feeling miserable and wishing it would go that much quicker. It seems my wish was granted.

This weekend I went to see the first Lord of the Rings film of the trilogy - The Fellowship of the Ring - at the Embassy theatre. As I told my current benefactor Matt I saw it 'as it was meant to be seen'. The theatre was practically empty, and I got myself one of the fancy leather and named seats for the princely sum of $18. The sound system in this place is simply too good to describe, it's simply the best sound for a movie I can recall hearing. The reels themselves were also in pristine condition with a distinct lack of scratches and noise right from the start.

It's amazing what the right conditions can do for a film. I've seen it plenty of times already so I had thought that there wasn't much more for me to gain from seeing it again short of some kind of short-term nostalgia. I was wrong. The Balrog is considerably beastlier under these conditions, it ceases to sound like a cross between Speilberg's T-Rex and a jet engine and becomes something new entirely. A scene I previously thought had failed became quite the stunner, namely Galadriels 'Terrible as the dawn' sequence. I could feel Boromir getting pwned right through my seat! Of course the downfall of Sauron during the Last Alliance of Men and Elves practically floored me too with rolling waves of bass massaging my heart.

There was one glitch and I hope it didn't ruin anything in the film room... it seems someone munted up a reel and forced an unexpected intermission. This was great as I was hungry and went and grabbed myself a bag of chips while they got it back underway... but I can't help but think somebody muffed that can and now it's nothing better than fire-starter material.

I have just discovered that we receive support from one Mr Lister. It's incredibly hard to rely on someone who shares a name with a certain vindaloo loving lout lately of Coronation St. I also am working on a codebase formerly worked upon by a Mr Bates (and if you know anything about Auckland University history he shares that EXACT same name as some infamous soul but I'm assured has nothing to do with the naked antics of this certain other).

This Thursday I make the trek back to Auckland to acquire my girl and my stuff, to return this Saturday. I will not deny that I have greatly desired this.

Keep in touch you northern monkeys.

Today is probably my rock bottom for Wellington as yet. One of those silly chemically imbalanced days that make you wonder why the hell it was that you ever woke up this morning.

I went for a proper booze yesterday with Nick and Morgan last night, which was my first in a long time, and while it was nice and not too hectic I can't help but think that last nights activities have put me on a serious downer today.

My favourite person is not very happy with me for not being terribly communicative at the moment which is a bit of a kick in the greeblies today, so I'm headed for the chemist to acquire me some 5-HTP to help me through my insomnia and general world up-fuckery.

Swings and roundabouts they say, swings and roundabouts.

If anyone has any thoughts on using supplements like that please share them as I'm pretty uninformed anecdotally so I'd appreciate input.

Wibble.

Ambient pain and innocuous permeations [04 Mar 2007|12:06pm]
Week 1 down, down here in Wellington.

Friday was my first day of life here. I caught up with Nick Breese, his partner Amy, as well as dreamer. Just my luck to catch up with everyone on the same day and not stretch it out over the week!

We met up at a bar called Syn, with the Y being made up of a modified Quake symbol. No shock really, there was a net-cafe thing next door as well. Upon reaching the top of the stairs I realised that the Hells Pizza signs were indeed pointing here as well... yes, this is the first pub I've been in with a full Hells Pizza inside. Praise Allah! As I turn around to find my hiding hidalgos they then crack out with some Swing (Cherry Popping Daddy's if I remember correctly) over the jaunty sound-devices placed in the ceilings.

Ahh, Wellington, though hast embraced me.

The night finished with me meeting several new people thanks to the D, having the best (and best priced!) burger I can remember having, accompanied with a free massive feijoa smoothie... those guys rock (Off Beat Burgers I think they're called... in west bank?).

I have many interesting findings to report my Tallest, so I shall place them behind a cut for security reasons!

Scaramouche! [25 Feb 2007|10:00am]
So it seems I find myself in another land, filled with wonder and mystery. I wonder how people could ever drive on these crazy half-assed roads and I'm mystified at the speeds at which they do so.

Wellington, it's green and sunny at the moment, and I'm kind of bored. I suppose that's a part of the whole not knowing anyone thing.

It seems there isn't that many places available for rent in Wellington that aren't just stupidly priced in the $500 range for 2 bedrooms with no cats. Plus there aren't that many listed at all (less than a 5th of Aucklands listing on tard-me). Anything that looks promising is either being advertised for shits and giggles (update your shit people!) or is being looked after by totally incompetent flibbertigibbers who can't reply or call.

I'm currently in beautiful Khandallah, which is like living in the heart of Waitakere only steeper and considerably closer to town. Town itself is small and I only need look a direction to figure out how Peter and co. came up with the concept for Minas Tirith. Matt's place is about 5 minutes to the local train station. All the trains are electric I think meaning there's no real noise problem either plus there's many house-shaped sound-blocking objects in the way.

Overall, there are noticeably few "smash your 'ed in cunt" types around which makes me and my ipod feel a little better about public transport, also the bonus of the train only costing me $2 to get to town yesterday instead of 5 to 10 mortgages like it does in Auckland is quite refreshing.

I start work tomorrow in Thorndon, a lovely little area attached to or within town itself. I guess it's like Ponsonby only smaller and less snobby though the houses look similar - that restored villa look.

I was quietly tittering to myself while reviewing the paper in town yesterday. The front page was splattered with the horrors of transport in the middle of town... it taking like 15mins (!) to get from Northland to the centre of town due to the construction of new roads and bypasses and what have you and how it's such a shame and a certain key transport official thinks it's irrepairable and others think the opposite...

15 minutes?! Nigger plz, you know it's a traffic jam when you get to know the lives of the people in the other cars in the other 3 lanes coz you've all been stuck in these trenches for a couple of weeks with no supplies and a slim chance of an evac while Jerry gets so close you can smell the fish. And Wellington was telling Auckland to pipe down over it's earthquake yet their 'traffic jam' makes front page... sigh. The more things change the more they stay the same I guess.

Today I shall thrill myself with a trip to New World seeking delicious goods, and fingers crossed maybe even see David - if I don't get totally lost in between a few one way roads lined with cars and signs barking out orders for coupons and parking rights.
